A practical weekend of immersive gong paying, grounded in practical skill-building and direct experience. Intertwined with an exploration of David R. Hawkins’ book: Power vs. Force - and the Map of Consciousness with Roger (Gong) Newton
Program Overview
The Gong is one of humanity’s oldest therapeutic instruments, used for centuries in yoga, sound meditation, and vibrational therapy. It is highly effective for stress reduction, glandular stimulation, and releasing emotional blockages.
This hands-on weekend offers a comprehensive journey into the world of the Gong - ideal for beginners and experienced players alike, whether you own a Gong or are thinking of purchasing one. The program explores all major Gong styles and traditions without bias or endorsement of any specific type or maker.
You will gain practical skills, deeper listening ability, and confidence through direct experience.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the weekend, participants will:
Understand Gong types, construction, and the physics behind their sound
Master fundamental and some more advanced playing techniques
Confidently use the Gong in sound therapy, meditation, yoga, personal practice.
Explore the psycho-acoustic and metaphysical dimensions of Gong playing
Develop their own authentic relationship with the instrument - as well as movement and breath
Syllabus Structure & Flow
Friday afternon. Arrival. from 14.00 Unload equiptment (If applicble) Set up.
Friday evening: meet and take a walk in nature to ground before a welcoming opening ceremony.
Background/Foundations. Levels of .consciousness. Breath
Fire circle.
Nourishing Soup around the fire.
Listening.
History and cultural significance of Gongs across traditions
Gong anatomy, styles, and types (hanging and resting Gongs from around the world)
Science of metals workshop: physics, wave theory, and why Gongs work the way they do
Gong stands, playing implements, and accessories (including friction mallets/ flumies and hand techniques)
Hands-on exploration: first contact with a wide range of Gongs

Chi Kung practice Optional Swim
Light Breakfast
Techniques & Sonic Universe
Core playing techniques: from gentle attacks to sustained drones
Dynamics of sound and silence
Developing deep listening and tonal alchemy
Exercises across different Gong families
Creating textures, overtones, and therapeutic soundscapes
Common challenges and troubleshooting

Final group soundbath and integration.
Weekend closing ceremony 19.30 +/-
Throughout the weekend: live demonstrations, ample playing time provided Gongs, group discussions, and evening soundbaths.
NOTES
This is a flexible schedule and other than the start time everything is subject to change.
It is proposed that breacfasts be simple i.e. fruit (provided)
Lunch both days, will be around 13.00 and be a nourishing soup,
Ther is no provision for an evening meal but there will be a break in the scedue; for tea’s and food if required.
There’s a fridge and freezer adjacent to the outdoor kitchen - so within reason and keeping it simple - you are most welcme to bring your own food / drinks.
We suggest that if you have a special diet then bring what you feel will be adequate. This wekend is primarily about the Gongs and connection.
Workshop Leader
Roger (Gong) Newton has nearly two decades of dedicated Gong practice. He maintains a personal collection of over 25 hanging Gongs and many dozens of resting Gongs/ floor bells representing worldwide culture.
Roger blends experiential wisdom with scientific insight to create a supportive, empowering, and dynamic learning environment.
Location & Accommodation
The Gong Campout is held at a purpose built space at a private location near Hockley Railway Station, Essex.
There is a natural swim pond. So you may wish to bring an extra towel and suitable swimwear
Camping on-site is encouraged for the fullest immersive experience (bring your own tent).
B&B option available at the nearby: Isabella Rooms - 2 minutes away by car.

What’s Provided / What to Bring.
Provided: Wide selection of Gongs from global traditions for all participants to play, stands, and basic implements.
Recommended to bring: Your own mallets (if you have them), tent/camping gear, comfortable clothing, journal/notebook, and your personal Gong (optional – with the understanding that others will only play it with your permission).
No prior experience necessary. All Welcome
This program focuses purely on the Gong itself—its techniques, sound, and power. The Gong’s universal ability to dissolve concepts and transform conditions makes it a profound instrument shared across many traditions.
You will leave knowledgeable, empowered, elevated, and confident in your Gong practice.
